AN INTRODUCTION TO 3D MAYA

The software we are using to create 3D models is Maya 2016. Maya includes a variety of polygons and tools to get started modelling quickly and effectively. in our first lesson of using Maya we learnt the basic tools and features such as;

  • creating polygons

  • moving the polygons

  • rotating the polygons

  • resizing the polygons

  • basic camera function and more advanced ways of viewing the scene

  • the extrude tool

  • ways of selecting faces, edges and vectors

  • hypershading

Using a cube polygon and the basic tools we had learnt we attempted to create a spaceship.

this was quite easy and fun, I selected the cube polygon and 2 faces either side. Using the extrude tool i made two more cubes either side of the original. these would later become the engine of the ship. using the same method of extruding I created wings either side, only this time narrowing them down to a finer point. again using the extrude tool i created more of a body for the ship. legs, a cockpit, thrusters, weapons and some more wing type parts on top were added and what started out as a cube was now a quite 80's spaceship.

Using hypershading i gave the ship some colour. Creating new lamberts and applying them to faces meant i could change the colour of select faces to whatever i wanted. i chose orange for the cockpit and thrusters, red for the overall body, grey/white for a stripe down the middle and on the wings and dark grey/black for more internal parts and the legs.

Here is the result.
